What is melasma/patchy pigment?
Melasma is a type of hyper pigmentation characterisded by the appearance of generally symmetrical pigmented stains on the face, particularly the cheeks, nose, forehead and upper lip. It is common in women of all ethnic groups and skin prototypes, but is more commonly seen in Asian, African, Indian and Latin American individuals.
Can melasma/patchy pigment be treated?
Numerous treatment options are available to treat melasma/patchy pigment.These include laser treatments, peels, Cosmelan treatment, topical hydroquinone etc.
Melasma is a very complex problem that requires a multi-focal approach to treatment that addresses both improvement/elimination of existing pigmentation and preventing/reducing rebound pigmentation through maintenance program. This includes education regarding sun avoidance and sun protection.

How does Cosmelan work?
The Cosmelan treatment acts within pigment cells decreasing their colour production in areas where excessive production is apparent.
Cosmelan treatment can be carried out at any time of the year.
Cosmelan is compatible with any skin type and colour.
In 99% of cases involving epidermal pigmentation, the elimination process achieves a 95% efficacy rate.
What does the procedure involve?
Phase one involves the application of the Cosmelan 1 mask in treatment and the client is instructed to remove the mask at home after 8 hours. Phase two involves the daily application of cleanser, Cosmelan 2 maintenance cream, moisturiser and sunscreen which are provided in the treatment package for a 3-month period.
Is there any downtime?
The Cosmelan treatment is generally well tolerated with redness and skin flaking similar to that experienced after sunburn. The mask included in the aftercare kit can be used to minimise flaking skin and makeup can be applied to mask the redness.
What results should I expect from Cosmelan treatment?
During the first or second week after Cosmelan treatment, the skin will already show a substantial improvement. Pigmentation and fine lines will diminish with the skin appearing brighter, smoother and rejuvenated. This improvement will continue over the next three months maintenance period.

How does Pastelle Laser treat skin melasma/patchy pigment?
Pastelle's advanced pulse system is delivered at the right intensity to act on the darkened areas of pigment, minimising the risk of harm to the skin and surrounding tissues.
What does treatment involve?
Your skin will be cleansed and your eyes protected with appropriate laser eye goggles. A laser beam will be applied to the areas of concern.
Following treatment you will have appropriate post procedure skincare and sunscreen applied.
Is treatment painful?
Pastelle Laser treatment is fast and comfortable. You will be aware of mild warmth in the treatment area and may feel a slight sting similar to a rubber band being snapped against your skin, but this is minimal, and highly tolerated by most patients.
What results can I expect?
You may experience some initial darkening of the treated areas. This is temporary, and after about 5-7 days, will begin to fade.
How many treatments will I need?
Usually 3-4 treatments are required to reduce most of the pigment which becomes progressively lighter with each treatment.
